Mumble voice server - what it is and what it can do

Mumble is voice chat built for players, and it shows: excellent audio quality with almost no delay. Its positional audio places each speaker in 3D space, so you get a real sense of where your teammates are, and the background hiss that plagues older clients is simply gone.

If you use a server regularly, you can register on it. That reserves your nickname so nobody can impersonate you. Bear in mind that your identity lives in a certificate file – back it up somewhere safe, because you will need it to restore your settings after reinstalling Mumble or your operating system. Think of it as your passport for that server.
Alongside voice, Mumble has its own text chat: message a single player privately, or the whole channel at once.

Once you are registered on a server, Mumble lets you:
• Talk to individual players privately.
• Move users between channels.
• Manage channels and set passwords on them, and attach links, images, and descriptions to any channel.
• Talk on several channels at once, each with its own push-to-talk key.
• Ban individual users by IP address.
• Use the Logitech G15 gaming keyboard.
• Bridge communication between separate channels.
• Create player groups with different admin and user permissions.
• Set your own avatar and comment.

Server owners can also set a custom welcome message, image included.
There are other apps in this space, but Mumble has clear advantages over all of them.

First, it is fully open source, which means it can be modified and extended freely. It is also cross-platform and runs on every major operating system in use today.

With a game plugin installed, Mumble fine-tunes positional audio: a player far away sounds quieter and more muffled, and voices shift left or right depending on where they are standing.

Next to Ventrilo and TeamSpeak, Mumble wins on sound quality and has a far more sensitive voice activation system. It ships with a built-in overlay and its own echo cancellation.

It also encrypts everything over SSL, which no other client in this category does.

The downsides are worth naming: setup takes some patience and can be daunting if you have never configured a voice client before, and the client is a larger download than TeamSpeak or Ventrilo.

On balance, Mumble is a powerful, high-quality, and genuinely pleasant piece of software to use.
